A short video update from the PartoMa project with impressions from seminars where midwives and doctors are trained in the PartoMa guidelines.

In 2021, the team behind the PartoMa project co-created clinical guidelines with 100 midwives and doctors. Now, they are implementing the guidelines through recurring in-house seminars in five of Dar es Salaam's busiest maternity units. Every three months, 220 midwives and doctors are attending PartoMa seminars at five hospitals. That is 70% of the hospitals' birth attendants.

See the impressions from these seminars in this video.

The PartoMa project is about co-creating and implementing context-tailored guidelines for childbirth care at busy urban hospitals in Tanzania. It is funded by Danida, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.

Demographic challenges and opportunities in Asia and Africa

Keynote address by Reiner Klingholz on 29 June 2021 at the international conference 'Asia and Africa in Transition'.

About the keynote: All countries seem to undergo a demographic transition, which in fact is a socioeconomic transition. In this process, societies experience a decline in infant mortality and fertility rates triggered by access to medical services, better education (especially for women), economic development and higher incomes. As a result, population growth declines. As different countries undergo this transition at various moments, population dynamics can differ considerably from region to region. This can be shown by the demographic situations in Asia and Africa. In most of the formerly fast-growing countries in East and Southeast Asia fertility rates have fallen already close to replacement level or even below. In Africa instead, especially in countries south of the Sahara, high fertility rates are still dominant. Population growth in many places remains at a high level, which in itself is a major factor for sluggish development. The analysis of formerly very poor Asian countries like Bangladesh or Vietnam shows that basic investments in health, education and jobs pave the road to demographic transition and opens the window to capture a demographic dividend. Countries like Ethiopia have shown that similar developments are possible in Africa. Nevertheless, the demographic transition poses new challenges to the respective countries, as lower birth rates and economic development imply aging populations. These countries have to prepare for lifelong learning to secure the productivity of a declining workforce, for a changing pattern of disease and for a higher financial burden caused by the need of social welfare for the elderly.

Colombia has nearly universal health coverage where approximately 98% of the population has health insurance. At the same time, there are large regional differences in the quality of available health services and it is particularly low in rural and sparsely populated areas. As such, there are persistent inequalities in health outcomes in the different population groups and regions.

Norwegian Centre for Rural Medicine (NCRM), UIT – The Arctic University of Norway was asked by the Ministry of Health and Care Services to take the lead on developing this collaboration, and since November 2018, NCRM has worked to develop the program Rural Health for Peace, in close collaboration with Colombian project partners. One aim being to develop a workable model to work systematically with recruitment and retainment of health professionals in rural and remote areas in Colombia.

NCRM is working in close collaboration with two universities in Colombia, Universidad de la Sabana and Universidad del Tolima, local health authorities, the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs in Colombia and local communities in two pilot areas.

For the presentation on the 2 June members of the team will present Rural Health for Peace, the background and progress thus far, including a short presentation of two student projects (MA Public Health & PhD project).

Presentations by

Torsten Risør, MD, PhD, associate professor, UiT - The Arctic University of Norway

The webinar is moderated by Ingvill Konradsen, Senior Advisor, Norwegian Centre for Rural Medicine, UiT- The Arctic University of Norway.

On 11 September 2020, Troels Lillebæk gave his inaugural lecture 'Tuberculosis – the never ending story? From Molecular to Global Perspective'.
About the lecture: Despite vaccine, diagnostics and efficient inexpensive treatment for decades, tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading infectious killer worldwide. Even in Europe, high rates of multi-drug resistant TB in former Soviet Union countries is an imminent concern, and in the Danish Kingdom, Greenland continues to struggle with high rates of TB. At the same time, the welfare state Denmark experiences extraordinary high rates of TB among socially marginalised persons. It is a never ending story.
